Things are going from strength to strength at MGM gym in Marbella and this week they are very pleased to announce the signing of the popular Motherwell flyweight Iain Butcher.
“Baby Butch”, born in Bellshill was once on Team GB´s amateur roster, the nippy 21-year-old Scot joined the paid ranks just over 2 years ago. Eight successive wins vaulted him into an unlikely title opening against Current British Champion Kevin Satchell,
Butcher had approximately 50 bouts as an amateur and lost about 12, those defeats coming mainly at international tournaments. In 2010, he went to India for the Commonwealth Federations and then the Commonwealth Games, which were peaking moments of his amateur career.
Now with a record of 10-1 and 4 KO’s his only loss came last July in Liverpool against Kevin Satchell who he pushed all the way before Satchell won a contentious points decision victory.
In October last year, Butcher lifted the vacant WBO European flyweight title with a stunning first round knockout of Gabor Molnor. The fight was scheduled for 10 rounds, but Butcher made it a short night with a devastating right hand that left the Hungarian slumped on the mat.
His last fight was at the end of February when he beat Valentin Marinov by TKO in his hometown of Motherwell.
At MGM Butcher will be trained by Danny Vaughan and all parties are excited about the move. “I am very happy to get the opportunity to move to MGM Marbella to train full time and further my career” said Butcher “the hardest thing about the move is leaving my Mrs and my young lad at home, but I know this is the sacrifice I have to make to go all the way. Everything I do is for them. It´s also going to be hard to leave my training team who have got me to where I am at today but as a team we all agreed this is the best move to take me to the next level in my career. I am looking forward to working with Danny Vaughan and his stable and the MGM team. I would like to say thanks for the opportunity and I am sure we can go all the way…… now I can’t wait to get over and get started!”
Vaughan and MGM mirror Butcher´s enthusiasm, “I´m made up that I will be working with Iain, he has got the potential to go all the way and I firmly believe that together we can do it!”
It´s going to a busy year at MGM, so watch this space!
